Abstract: After
World War II, following the Soviet example, there was a political purge
in the Eastern European countries that were under Communist
governments. Many of the victims were from the highest ranks of the
Communist parties. In Hungary 155 people were convicted in the show
trial of “László Rajk and his associates”. One of the charges against
Rajk and his group –who were all former brigadists – was the “Trockyist
deviation” during the Spanish Civil War. This study, based on the
formerly secret fonds of the Hungarian Political Police and the relevant
documents of the Comintern and the KGB, analyses this “Spanish yarn”,
and puts a special emphasis on Ernő Gerő’s negative role in the events.
